Keeper of the Lost Cities Party Theme
Keeper of the Lost Cities is a book series written by Shannon Messenger. My daughter became a fan of the series and quickly got me hooked too. We are anxiously waiting for the next installment!
In the meantime we are rereading our favorites, laughing over the funniest parts and pouring over the best details. Details which we incorporated into a KOTLC themed party for her birthday because she’s a Keeper!
The book setting describes richly jeweled elven cities and their unique way of life. Gold, silver, and rose gold seemed appropriate color choices for our theme but because gems come in all colors just about any colors could be used for this theme.
Light Leaping Crystal Craft
One of the most enchanting things about the way of life for the characters in these books is the way they travel. With the right color and number of facets it’s simply a matter of holding your crystal up to the light and stepping into its luminous path.
I got a variety of quartz crystals and a selection of earring bases, bracelets, necklaces and even hair pins to embellish. A few small jewelry pliers and some lightweight wire were all that was needed to attach the crystals. We had so much fun choosing colors based on where we’d like to travel and what type of jewelry we’d wear. For a list of colors and destinations mentioned in the books so far go to the KOTLC Wiki Fandom.
Our Silveny, Black Swan, Geode Cake
Our cake was a fondant cake with a blue geode. Edible paper showcased symbols of special abilities around the sides of the cake. Silveny pranced proudly on top effectively stomping the Neverseen symbol - down with the Neverseen! The Black Swan symbol was displayed prominently because wherever the storyline goes we feel confident the good guys will triumph in the end!
The book characters often talk about their favorite elven foods. Some of the sweets mentioned are Custard Bursts, Butterblasts, Mallowmelt, Mood Candy, and Ripplefluffs. There are some recipes on the author’s website including a recipe for Mallowmelt Cupcakes. We tried the recipe and if you like your cupcakes extra sweet you’d like Mallowmelt. Cupcakes make a great party dessert and for fans of the books the chance to try Mallowmelt would be too good to pass up.
Other KOTLC Party Activities
If time and space allow a game of Base Quest would be the ultimate Keeper party game. The main characters play this capture the flag type game in the books. You can find game instructions on the KOTLC Wiki Fandom site.
Another fun activity would be breaking geodes. Since crystals are such a big part of the series discovering some natural (forbidden city) crystals would be an amazing activity and make for some really cool keepsakes. A large set with enough geodes for everyone could even be wrapped for the guest of honor as his or her gift.
You can’t beat slime for an engaging party activity. It’s easy to make Keeper themed slime with mix-ins like gems, confetti, and glitter. See ours in the video below!
Prattles
Prattles are boxed candies that include a collectable animal pin. The KOTLC characters give and receive Prattles as gifts and treats on special occasions. The pins are numbered in direct correlation with how many of each animal are alive - including surviving endangered species hidden but kept from extinction. Which means pins could include everything from swans to T. Rexes to alicorns. Prattles are described as peanut butter flavored caramels with a cream center packaged in a silver box. They couldn’t be easier to make - see my video below. For the other supplies I used check out the Keeper Cache page. Download the labels free on the Appendix page.
